On Saturday 26th November, Spanish students from Colegio Maravillas Programas Internacionales de Benalmádena visited the town of Fuente Piedra.
The day began early in the morning with a typical Andalusian breakfast, consisting of bread, tomato, olive oil and ham, accompanied by coffee.
Afterwards, they visited Juan Ramón Bernal’s farm, where the students were able to learn first-hand about the olive harvesting techniques, receiving explanations from the manager Oscar, who very kindly answered all the students’ questions. After this visit, the group went to the cooperative’s oil mill where Rafael, the person in charge, gave all kinds of explanations about the harvesting, washing, milling and transformation of the oil. The students were able to appreciate the separation of the oil and the water, and the new oil which, due to its colour and shine, attracted everyone’s attention.
After the visit to the oil mill, the students and teachers met with the mayor of Fuente Piedra, Siro Pachón, who welcomed and greeted the members of the group, who came from different countries such as Scotland, Iran, Switzerland, Japan and Russia, and asked questions to the mayor.
Finally, the visit was completed with the interprovincial olive press, where the students received explanations of the transformation of the alperujo, a by-product resulting from the olive into a pallet, solid biomass, useful for both domestic and industrial heating, the extraction of the oil contained in the aforementioned pellet and the production of electrical energy in the adjoining plant.
In short, the complete cycle that the olive undergoes until the precious olive oil is obtained and the integral use of the alperujo, from which even the residual ash from the ovens is used as fertiliser due to its high potassium content.
The visit concluded with a tasting of local tapas which delighted the participants. The group, made up of 16 students and teachers, was delighted and very grateful for the treatment received during the visit to the town of Fuente de Piedra.
